
The Kabaka foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has presented 20 Laptops, Solar Power banks and other accessories to the University of Ghana in Accra.
The Chairman of the Foundation, Nana Owiredu Wadie said it would go a long way to support the institution’s One Student One Laptop initiative.
He said aside the items the group was also planning to offer scholarship packages to between five and ten brilliant but needy students in the university.
The Chairman indicated that the organisation had been supporting several sectors including health, education, social interventions, cultural preservations, economic empowerment, disability rehabilitation and empowerment, infrastructure development as well as environment and sanitation programmes.
The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, commended the group for the initiative which she explained would support the academic studies of the students to enable them to achieve their goals.
She indicated that the leaders of the NGO had visited the School two weeks to discuss issues aimed at assisting the institution achieve its academic goals but didn’t even dream of them fulfilling their promise in just two weeks.
The VC stated that the digitization of all classrooms as well as the creation of hotspot zones to enable students to access the internet easily on campus was on course.
The University, Professor Appiah Amfo said was very all- inclusive and embraced students from different backgrounds, some of whom could not afford to pay their fees.
She indicated that the One- student- One Laptop would help equip the beneficiaries with the necessary skills needed in the job market.
“The University already has 500 Laptops and this 20 will add up to the number”, she added.
The VC said plans were far advanced for the University to partner companies to establish laptop assembly plants on campus for both staff and students, especially those with disabilities to buy, adding “sod will soon be cut for construction of the assembly plant.”.
