Let technocrats speak freely, critique—Sam Mensah

Dr Sam Mensah a former Technical Adviser to the Ministry of Finance, has advised present and future governments to always create an enabling environment that will allow technocrats to speak, critique and contribute to the growth and development of the country.

He explained that technocrats were assets to the country but were unable to speak freely and critique due to the tag of being anti-government or pro-government and stressed on the need to build a culture in which they were free to speak and critique current and future governments.

“We need to build a culture in which technocrats are free to speak and critique because often technocrats are quiet, they do not say much for fear of offending the government or some political leaders, but we need to have technocrats who are open, critique and contribute immensely to the growth and development of the nation,” Dr Mensah postulated.

He noted that there was the need to encourage them to speak their minds, encourage them to point out to politicians where they were going wrong and the government should rally support and assistance to work assiduously without fear of favour of threats, harassment and intimidation.

Dr Mensah also urged the government to facilitate support and assistance to businesses to help them recover from shocks of COVID-19 pandemic since the government’s strategy had been seen as a good strategy but occasionally there had been lapses.

“However, overall, I will not say Ghana has not had a respectable COVID-19 strategy, what we need to do is to accelerate the support we are giving to businesses, so they can start re-employing and bringing idle capacity to work,” he suggested. –myjoyonline.com
