NDC sweeps all 11 constituency seats in Upper West Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has swept all 11 constituency seats in the Upper West Region in the just ended 2024 general election, according to official results from the Electoral Commission (EC).

The win means the parliamentary candidates of the NDC managed to unseat incumbent MPs of the New Patriotic Party of Nandom, Lambussie and Sissala East Constituencies, won in 2020 elections.

Former Minister of the Interior and MP for Nandom was unseated by two time contestant of the NDC, Mr Richard Kuuire.

Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr Amidu Chinnia, who entered parliament after his win in the 2020 elections, was denied a second term by his NDC opponent, Mr Mohammed Bataglia .

In effect, all incumbent parliamentary candidates of the NDC retained their seats.

The absolute win denied the two female parliamentary candidates in the region, who contested on the ticket of the NPP a chance to represent their constituents in parliament.

Hajia Humu Awudu and Hajia Ayisha Salifu who contested on the ticket of the NPP in the Wa Central and Jirapa Constituencies respectively, failed to unseat incumbents Dr Hassan Rashid Pelpuo of the Wa Central and Mr Cletus Seidu Dapilah of Jirapa.

Even though, the NPP candidate for the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa Constituency in the last election gave the incumbent, Dr Sebastian Sandaare a run for his money, with a margin of 2, 427 votes, he could not pull through in the just ended elections as was anticipated by many.

On the presidential score, former President John Dramani Mahama, NDC presidential candidate, outperformed Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP presidential candidate, by amassing 50,354 of the valid votes cast as against 17, 753 attained by the Dr Bawumia.

Meanwhile some journalists covering the 2024 elections at Wa in the Wa Central Constituency were attacked by unknown assailants at the Danpuoripaala Centre Limanyiri polling station B, after they attempted to film a scene of misunderstanding that erupted at the polling station.

Security personnel were present at every polling station throughout the polls.
