Painter accused of stealing BoG cables granted GH¢1m bail

A painter, accused of stealing electrical cables at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) building site at Ridge has been granted bail GH¢1million bail with two sureties, by the Accra Circuit Court.

Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, denied the charge of unlawful entry and stealing electrical cables worth GH¢1,035,500.

The relieving judge, Mr Isaac Addo, ordered the prosecution to comply with the rules of disclosures, and adjourned the case to May 7.

Prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agustin Kingsley Oppong, said that the complainants in the case, Samuel Nii Tettey and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, were safety officer and electrical engineer respectively, at the new BoG building at Ridge, which was under construction.

The prosecution said the complainant detected that someone had broken into the Energy Farm at the site, and stolen copper cables valued at GH¢1,035,500.

ASP Oppong told the court that when the Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera at the site was reviewed, accused and two others were viewed stealing the copper cables from the Energy Farm.

According to ASP Oppong, the complainants nabbed the accused and handed him over to the police.

The court heard that investigations revealed that the accused and two others, at large, entered the Energy Farm by means of a scaffold, and cut the copper cables with a sharp object and carried them away.

ASP Oppong said investigations also indicated that accused sold the electrical cables to someone at Kwame Nkrumah Circles, but he (Lawal) could not lead the police to arrest his accomplices and the alleged dishonest receiver. —GNA
