Parliament yesterday reconvened to conduct urgent business following a recall of the House from recess by the Speaker, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in accordance with Standing Order 58(4).
Although proceedings were scheduled to begin at noon, as indicated in a press statement issued by Mr Bagbin directing the recall, the House eventually commenced business later in the day.
The Ghanaian Times observed that only a few Members of Parliament (MPs) were seated in the Chamber when government business commenced. The MPs who arrived were, however, in high spirits as they made their way into the Chamber.
Before proceedings began, the Majority and Minority caucuses held separate meetings in the morning, a usual practice when the House reconvenes.
The Business Committee also met with the Speaker to finalise the day’s business, contributing to the delay in the commencement of proceedings.
The recall had earlier been criticised by the Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Tolon, Mr Iddrisu Habib, who described it as an “unnecessary waste of taxpayers’ money.”
He argued that the matters requiring Parliament’s attention could wait until the House’s normal resumption.
The Majority Chief Whip and MP for South Dayi, Mr Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, however, defended the recall, saying it was in line with constitutional and parliamentary procedures.
He maintained that the recall should not be considered unusual, stressing that Parliament could be summoned during recess whenever urgent business required the attention of the House.
Parliament is expected to rise on Friday, August 28, 2026, after completing the government business outlined in the Speaker’s statement directing the recall.
