A 21-year-old man has been found dead in a galamsey pit at Twumkrom in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region.
The deceased, Kwame Baah Donalson, alias “Jawas”, is reported to have left home three days before his death and failed to return, prompting residents and relatives to launch a search for him.
His decomposed body was later discovered in a galamsey pit on Friday, August 21, 2026, with his bag reportedly floating on the water.
Residents suspect foul play and have called on the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. They alleged that the deceased might have been killed by security personnel of a small-scale mining company operating in the area.
According to the residents, the pit where the body was found falls within the concession of a small-scale mining company, JegriBekala.
It remains unclear whether the deceased was involved in illegal mining activities in the area.
The Assemblyman for the Twumkrom Electoral Area, Edmond Kusi, told The Ghanaian Times that residents had been gripped with fear following the mysterious death.
He said the residents were calling on the police to thoroughly investigate the incident and arrest anyone found culpable.
Mr Kusi said a joint team of police personnel and the Ghana National Fire Service retrieved the body from the pit and deposited it at the hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, confirmed the incident when contacted, but stated that the Regional Police Command had yet to be fully briefed on the matter.
