An alleged armed robber, Muntari Munumi, 20, has been re-arrested by the Upper East Regional Police Command following a robbery at Sapeliga in the Upper East Region.
The suspect, however, died after reportedly collapsing while leading a police team to arrest his alleged accomplices.
A statement signed by Chief Inspector Abdul-Raman Sumaila of the Public Affairs Unit of the Upper East Regional Police Command said an M16 A2 assault rifle, three live rounds of ammunition and five spent shells were retrieved during the operation.
Preliminary investigations indicated that two victims, whose names were withheld, were returning home from Bazua after work when they were attacked at Sapeliga Junction, Kobore.
The statement said the suspect allegedly robbed the victims of a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and GH¢1,820 in cash.
It added that the victims engaged the suspect in a struggle and managed to seize his weapon after he had fired several shots but missed his target.
They subsequently alerted the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, whose members mobilised, arrested the suspect and handed him over to the police with the weapon.
During interrogation, Munumi reportedly disclosed the names of his alleged accomplices and the source of the weapon used in his operations, offering to lead the police to arrest them.
While accompanying the police team, however, he complained of dizziness and suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Command said efforts were underway to arrest the alleged accomplices and commended the victims and the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee.
