Team Ghana to face West Africa in Indece Day armwrestling

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) is gear­ing up to host the annual Independence Day armwrestling challenge, tagged ‘Battle for Independence’ on March 7, 2025 in Accra.

“The event promises to be an electrifying display of strength, skill, and patriotism, as Ghana’s top armwrestlers face off in a battle for supremacy with their counterparts from neighbouring countries,” a statement from the GAF said.

The tournament will feature matches in various weight catego­ries, with athletes competing for prizes, and the ultimate bragging rights.

“The Independence Day arm­wrestling will feature guest pullers from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo, adding an international flavour to the competition. The foreign ath­letes will compete alongside their Ghanaian counterparts, making for a thrilling and unpredictable Independence Day showdown,” the statement added.

Ahead of the blockbuster event, GAF has confirmed a star-studded lineup of Ghana’s best armwres­tlers, including Africa’s best female armwrestlers, Grace Minta, Mabel Yeboah, Daniel Acquah, Henry Otoo and Prince Affum to be on Ghana’s cast for the competition.

Other talents expected on dis­play includes Charles Osei Asibey Jnr, the son of the GAF President, Afia Kumah, a formidable arm­wrestler from the Ghana Police Service, and Issah Kunya, a top armwrestler from the 3C Club.

Expected from neighbouring Nigeria are Sarah Matthews, Bless­ing Ogunbure, Olubisi Oyewusi, Mausi Zanu, Aniedu Godwin and Chinedu Isama.

Benin will also be represented by a talented team of armwrestlers made up of African Games double gold medalist, Marie Rose Laleye, Sébastien Kpaloko and Marcel Vitchoedo.

Togo will also be sending a strong team led by Amou Amou­zou Honoré and Tchagbeleou Razak.

The President of GAF, Mr Charles Osei Asibey, told the media that, “This year’s Inde­pendence armwrestling challenge would be bigger and better than previous events.

“We have a strong lineup of ath­letes, both local and international, and we’re expecting a thrilling competition that will showcase the best of West African armwres­tling,” he said.

The ‘Battle for Independence’ armwrestling tournament is put together by the GAF and forms part of activities to commemo­rate Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations.
