Telecel launches 2026 SME Month to drive business growth

Telecel Ghana has launched its 2026 Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SME) Month with a renewed focus on helping emerging businesses scale up, improve their operations and achieve sustainable growth.

The month-long campaign, themed: ‘Connect to Growth: Unlock More,’ is being led by Telecel Business and will provide practical business support, digital solutions and growth opportunities to SMEs across the country.

The programme will focus on skills development, technology, market access and networking, with activities designed to help businesses move beyond survival and build sustainable enterprises.

Speaking at the launch, the Acting Director of Enterprise Business at Telecel Ghana, Nii Lartey, said the focus this year was deliberately shifting towards helping businesses grow and remain sustainable.

“Starting a business is one thing, but growing, sustaining and turning it into a thriving business is where the struggle lies for many SMEs. Telecel Business has built practical tools, knowledge, systems, connections and opportunities to help emerging businesses level up,” Mr Lartey said.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, Ghana had more than 2.6 million business establishments as of March 2026, with about 92 per cent operating as informal micro businesses.

Telecel Ghana said the figures highlighted the need to support businesses to transition from small and informal operations into sustainable and scalable enterprises.

As part of the initiative, Telecel is partnering the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) on a Train-to-Scale programme, a free regional training initiative covering business skills, mentorship, content creation and Telecel Cash Merchant training.

The programme is expected to equip selected SME owners with practical knowledge and tools to improve and grow their businesses.

The Head of the MSME Development Directorate of the GEA, Habiba Sumani, said digital inclusion was critical to achieving inclusive economic growth.

“We believe that digital inclusion is central to inclusive economic growth. When entrepreneurs can access reliable connectivity and understand how to use digital tools effectively, they are better able to reach customers, lower transaction costs, access information, build professional networks and participate more meaningfully in local and global markets,” she said.

Madam Sumani commended Telecel for recognising the role of SMEs in Ghana’s development.

A key feature of this year’s programme will be The CEOs Unscripted with Delay, which will bring together founders of thriving businesses to discuss the realities of building and scaling enterprises.

The session will focus on their experiences, including mistakes, setbacks, technology choices and growth strategies.

The SME Month will also extend beyond Accra through the Telecel Business Runway, which will take the initiative to the Western Region and bring together existing SMEs, start-ups, financial advisers and investors.

The Head of SME at Telecel Ghana, Alfred Neizer, said this year’s campaign was being driven by the company’s flagship Boss Plan, a product designed to support the digital transformation of SMEs.

He said the plan offered high-volume, non-expiry data and voice bundles, alongside a customer outreach and SMS marketing tool.
