Telecel programme nurtures next generation of digital innovators

Students participating in the first cohort of the Telecel Ashanti Codes programme have showcased an impressive array of robotics and software solutions aimed at addressing everyday challenges.

The development marks a significant milestone in the initiative’s goal to equip 1,000 learners across the Ashanti Region with digital skills.

The exhibitions, held at Wiamoase and Obuasi, brought together students, facilitators and members of the media to witness projects developed after weeks of hands-on training in coding, robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

The students presented a wide range of innovations, including obstacle-sensor robot cars, line-following robots, robotic assistants for the visually impaired, text-to-speech software, alarm applications and calculator apps.

They demonstrated how technology could be applied to solve practical problems within their communities, while also showcasing creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Ashanti Codes, an initiative of the Telecel Ghana Foundation as part of this year’s Ashanti Month celebrations, is designed to introduce upper primary and junior high school students to coding, robotics, design thinking and IoT technologies through structured weekend training sessions.

The sessions are being held in Kumasi, Nsuta, Wiamoase and Obuasi.

The Executive Head for Ashanti, Bono East and Ahafo at Telecel Ghana, Mr Kwaku Asiedu, described the exhibition as a clear demonstration of the potential of young people when given the opportunity to explore technology and innovation.

He said the projects on display highlighted the creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities of the students, adding that they reflected the talent and potential of Ghana’s young people to become the next generation of innovators.

The programme, delivered in partnership with the Ghana Library Authority and Asustem Robotics, with support from AngloGold Ashanti, forms part of the Telecel Ghana Foundation’s Connected Learning pillar.

The initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide and inspire the next generation of innovators, creators and digital leaders.

The Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications Manager at Telecel Ghana, Ms Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, said the exhibitions demonstrated the impact of investing in young people and creating opportunities for them to innovate.

She said the initiative was helping students to move beyond consuming technology to creating solutions capable of improving lives, strengthening communities and preparing them for the digital economy.

The Social Development and Gender Superintendent at AngloGold Ashanti, Mrs Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting initiatives that prepare young people for the future.

She said the partnership with the Telecel Ghana Foundation reflected a shared commitment to equipping students with robotics, artificial intelligence and STEM skills to enable them think critically, innovate and develop practical solutions to real-world challenges.
