Tributes to Cameron Duodu @ 88
I first shared this on October 9, 2022
What *Professor Felix Konotey-Ahulu* has to say about Cameron Duodu.
“Indeed Cameron Duodu, Esquire, has done more in his four Score five years than many of us with Doctorates have done. You wait, please, and see whether it will not be long before he is referred to as “Dr Cameron Duodu”.
Knowing him, however, if many Doctorates were conferred on him, he would prefer to be called just “Cameron Duodu”.
I, more than 20 years ago, recommended him for an honour in London, and he got it.
Forty-seven years ago exactly in a Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences October Symposium on CHIEFTAINCY he spoke on the same platform as PhD Professors. He equalled them.
But one historical fact he alone of all the Speakers mentioned was so piercingly true that one Paramount Chief got up with his retinue, and walked out of the British Council in fury! I heard him “with my own two ears” (as they say in Ghana), muttering “I had before thought so highly of this young man, but now …”
When it comes to Public Health, I once put it in writing that Cameron Duodu had done more than most of us Medically Qualified Postgraduates – a statement that infuriated one Professor of Medicine when he learnt that I had agreed with what Cameron expiated on Malaria Vaccine proposals.
You see (again as they say in Ghana ) he does not talk by heart. He does his homework.”
Professor Felix Konotey-Ahulu is Kwegyir Aggrey Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics, University of Cape Coast, Ghana and Consultant Physician, Genetic Counsellor in Sickle Cell & Other Haemoglobinopathies, Harley Street, London.
