The University of Ghana (UG) sports team emerged the best from the 2023 Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) games that ended at the Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
Team Legon won seven gold medals out of the eight for grabs, and a silver at the championship that attracted 20 universities across Africa; competing for honours in rugby and tennis.
Six athletes, namely Abubakari Yakubu Lea, Caleb Aryettey, Michael Tetteh Dosoo, Lawrencia Onome Aghorghoboa, Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku and Lawrencia Manu.

Aryertey paired with Yakubu Lea in the Men’s Doubles while Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku was paired with Aghorghobia to win the women’s doubles.
Team UG also won medals in the men’s and women’s team event.
Aghorghobia, Akuaku and Manu partnered to emerge victorious in the women’s team event just as the partnership of Aryertey, Yakubu Lea and Tetteh Dosoo dominated the men’s team event.
In the women’s tennis single, Akuaku won the silver medal while the pair of Akuaku and Yakubu Lea completed the medal swoop with a gold in the Mixed Doubles.
The Sports Director of UG, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, attributed the team’s success to the years of investment and policies focused on nurturing talents.
“These patient and silent investments in sports at the University are beginning to bear fruits; we seem to be doing something right,” he told the Times Sports.
Dr Bitugu expressed the hope that UG will produce some of the best athletes for the African Games either as current or past student athletes.
