UniMAC gets first Chancellor

The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed businessman and entrepreneur, Mr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, as the first Chancellor of the university, effective August 1, 2026.

The appointment was approved by the University’s Governing Council at its meeting on May 26, 2026, in accordance with the University’s statutes.

A statement issued by the university on Monday said the appointment marked a major milestone in UniMAC’s history as it continued to strengthen its position as Ghana’s leading specialised institution for media, arts and communication education.

Mr Ofori Sarpong is the Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies and is widely recognised for his contributions to business, entrepreneurship and national development.

Over the years, he has built successful businesses in manufacturing, real estate, finance, construction and the media, creating jobs and contributing to Ghana’s economic growth.

As Chancellor, Mr Ofori Sarpong will serve as the ceremonial head of UniMAC and will also provide leadership in promoting the university’s vision, strengthen partnerships between the university and industry, and confer degrees and other academic honours on behalf of the institution.

The Governing Council expressed confidence that his experience, leadership and commitment to excellence would help deepen UniMAC’s engagement with industry, expand strategic partnerships and raise the university’s national and international profile.

Mr Ofori Sarpong is a Chartered Accountant with a Master of Science degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom.

He is also pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration degree at École Supérieure de Gestion (ESG), France.

He is the founder of the Special Group of Companies and has interests in several businesses, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited and U2 Salt Limited.
