
The Upper West Regional Police Command has intercepted 50,000 rounds of ammunition concealed in a commercial vehicle travelling through an unapproved route outside Wa.
The intelligence-led operation, carried out on Monday, June 29, 2026, led to the arrest of three suspects as part of efforts to curb the illegal movement of weapons and strengthen security in the region.
A statement signed by the Deputy Upper West Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Kamasa, said a search of the vehicle uncovered 200 boxes of AA cartridges, equivalent to 50,000 rounds of ammunition, hidden beneath other goods.
The suspects, identified as Alhassan Issahaku, Iddrisu Mashood and Alhaji Issahaku, are in police custody assisting with investigations.
According to the statement, investigations are underway to establish the source of the ammunition, its intended destination and identify any additional persons connected to the attempted transportation. It added that further arrests were expected as investigations progressed.
ACP Kamasa commended the professionalism, vigilance and integrity of the officers who conducted the operation, describing their actions as a demonstration of the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to enforcing the law and protecting communities.
He assured residents that the Regional Command remained committed to safeguarding lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining peace across the region.
The statement further noted that intelligence-led operations would continue to target criminal activities and strengthen surveillance along key transport corridors. It appealed to the public to support crime-fighting efforts by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities, stressing that community cooperation remained essential to preventing the illegal movement of arms and ammunition, and preserving peace and security in the Upper West Region.
