The family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo has confirmed that the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya, Ms Sarah Adwoa Safo, is in a stable condition and responding positively to medical treatment following Sunday’s shooting incident.
In a statement signed and dated June 22, the family expressed deep regret over what it described as “the unfortunate shooting incident” and sought to assure members of the Kristo Asafo Mission, relatives, and the general public of her recovery.
The family also moved to clarify the succession arrangements within the Kristo Asafo Mission, noting that, Ms Sarah Adwoa Safo is the recognised Head of the Kwadwo Safo Family.
The family said it does not recognise any installation or assumption of leadership by Israel Safo that is inconsistent with the late apostle’s directives, and dissociated itself from any claim by him to be acting on behalf of the Kwadwo Safo Family.
It cautioned the public to exercise care in any dealings with Israel Safo relating to the interests, assets, leadership or affairs of the Kristo Asafo Mission or the family, warning that anyone who chooses to do so does so at their own risk.
The former lawmaker sustained a gunshot injury and was rushed to hospital on Sunday following a shooting near her late father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka’s residence at Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region.
According to reports, the incident happened as Ms Safo was heading to the residence to attend a ceremony organised by the Kristo Asafo Church to introduce a new leader after the death of its founder.
Unconfirmed reports suggested armed men fired multiple rounds at her vehicle, with one bullet reportedly grazing her near the neck.
However, the Ghana Police Service later announced that preliminary investigations pointed to her suffering to a gunshot wound to her left ear.
On Tuesday, nine individuals accused in connection with the shooting incident involving the former legislator were granted bail by the court.
They were admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties. The sureties are not required to justify themselves but must sign a bail justification form as part of the court’s conditions.
The accused have all pleaded not guilty to five charges, including use of an offensive weapon, possession of an offensive weapon, prohibition of vigilante groups, discharging firearms in public, and causing unlawful damage.
The case stems from a shooting at a gathering linked to the Kristo Asafo Mission, which has been embroiled in a leadership dispute following the death of its founder, Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
Among the accused are Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, the brother of the injured former MP, along with Jehosaphat Tamaklo Safo, Kwabena Safo, and Benjamin Amoakwa Sam.
The rest include Enock Badu, Richard Ayitey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwaku Afriyie, and Kwadwo Safo Koomsom. Some of those accused are reported to be personal bodyguards of Nana Kwadwo Kantanka Akofena.
Prosecutors say the alleged shooting, which injured Ms Adwoa Safo, took place during activities connected to a disputed installation process within the Kristo Asafo Mission.
