Cardiff council asked to approve 1am Fury-Joshua ring walk

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are set for a 1am ring walk for their heavyweight boxing clash in Cardiff, subject to approval from the city council.

The Principality Stadium will host what has been billed as the biggest fight in British boxing history, with the bout scheduled for December 11.

However, the expected schedule for the showdown has now been revealed, with the main event set to take place in the early hours of Saturday morning, UK time.

An application to Cardiff Council confirmed that the ring walk is planned to begin at around 1am, following a short live music performance, with the stadium remaining open until 3.30am.

The proposed timings would suit peak viewing hours in the United States, where Saudi Arabia’s boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh, his American business partner Dana White and broadcaster Netflix had initially pushed for New York’s Madison Square Garden to host the event.

Although Cardiff was announced as the venue last month, the necessary changes to the stadium’s premises licence to permit the fight at such an early hour have yet to be secured.

To obtain the required permissions, Millennium Stadium plc has applied to Cardiff Council to extend the venue’s operating hours “on a very limited one-off occasion”.

The application seeks to extend the permitted hours for boxing and wrestling entertainment from the existing 1am cut-off to 3am on December 12.

A council spokesperson said: “This is to facilitate the proposed Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury bout, with the ring walk commencing at 0100.”

The licence variation also seeks an extension for live music on the same date to allow a short performance immediately before the ring walk.

It further proposes extending the permitted hours for recorded music, late-night refreshment and the sale of alcohol until 3am, with the stadium closing time moved to 3.30am.

The applicants added that the stadium roof would remain closed throughout the event and that enhanced security and stewarding arrangements would be in place.

An application to vary a premises licence must be advertised, including through the display of a notice at or on the premises, for 28 consecutive days.

Members of the public and other authorities may object to the Principality Stadium application or submit comments in support until November 3.

If no relevant representations are received, the council must grant the application.

If objections are submitted, a council hearing will be held to consider them. This could result in modifications to the licence conditions or the outright refusal of the application.

Following the announcement of the fight last month, Cardiff Council leader Chris Weaver said: “The contest at Principality Stadium has the potential to bring significant economic benefits to the city and attract visitors from across the UK and beyond.”
