Ghana’s accommodation industry has a curious business challenge and there are millions of rooms available, but a significant proportion of them are going unused, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), has said.
The findings, contained in the first four months of the Accommodation Unit Survey (AUS), covering November 2024 to February 2025, show that available room capacity increased from 5.03 million room-nights in November to 5.21 million in January, before falling to 4.69 million in February.
The Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, in a forward on the latest accommodation said the country had substantial accommodation capacity, but demand is unevenly distributed across regions, establishment types and market segments.
He said occupied rooms, however, rose from 2.25 million in November to 2.42 million in December before falling to 2.30 million in January and 2.10 million in February.
The government statistician said the national room occupancy peaked at 46.6 per cent in December, while bed occupancy reached 53.6 per cent.
“Hostels recorded occupancy rates of about 91 to 95 per cent, with standard hostels achieving between 96 and 99 per cent. In contrast, one-star hotels recorded room occupancy of only 28 per cent and bed occupancy of 24 per cent in February,” he said. Read More
