GRA vehicle rams into ‘tricycle taxi’, kills man, injures 2

There was chaos at Vume, near Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, last Thursday, when a patrol vehicle belonging to the Custom Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) rammed into a ‘tricycle taxi’, killing one person and injuring two others on the tricycle.

The incident infuriated some young people in the town and they set the GRA vehicle on fire.

The GRA vehicle was said to be chasing an unregistered vehicle believed to be carrying contraband goods on the Sogakope-Accra road when the tragedy occurred, at a place near the Vume Catholic Church.

The body identified to be that of Anani Dzakpasu, 28, has been taken to the morgue at the district hospital at Sogakope, while the two injured persons were on admission at the Comboni District Hospital, at Sogakope.

A source close to the hospital told the Ghanaian Times that Dzakpasu was riding the tricycle, which was heavily loaded with fuel wood.

The identities of the two injured persons were not established at the time of filing this report and five people have so far been arrested by the police in connection with the accident.

When contacted on phone at the weekend, the Sogakofe Police District Commander, Superintendent Owoahene Thomas Acheampong, refused to comment on the incident.

He, however, said “but you know we are in the 21st Century and you are calling me on phone for information. If you want the details of what happened, you have to come to Sogakope with your ID card and we can talk”.

As at yesterday some young people at Vume had fled the town which was gripped with an uneasy calm.
