Kotoko win, Hearts draw

Kumasi Asante Kotoko maintained their slim lead at the top of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) table after a hard fought 1-0 win over Basake Holy Stars in their match day 23 encounter in Kumasi.

With Goldstars and Hearts of Oak sharing the spoils, S. Tenedu’s 14th minute goal was enough to keep the Porcupine Warriors at the top as the competition reaches the home stretch.

It was a game Holy Stars went all out to at least get a goal but Kotoko was superior at the back, thwarting the efforts of the visitors.

Kotoko had a very good start and pressed Holy Stars. They appeared unsettled from that early pressure and committed a few errors.

The Porcupine Warriors capitalised to break the deadlock in the 14th minute.

But the visitors accepted the fight and carried the game to the host who were exposed at certain points but had goalkeeper Asare to thank for protecting the lead.

The second half was a balanced one, as both sides attempted to find the back of the net but were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Accra Hearts of Oak managed to escape from Bibiani with a point after drawing 1-1 with second placed, Goldstars.

After a goalless first half, the mining outfit got the lead in the 82nd minute from a penalty expertly converted by G. Anaba.

With that lead, they looked destined for the top spot but Hearts pulled a late equaliser through substitute Appiah Asare two minutes into additional time to silence the home crowd.

At the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, Accra Lions emerged 2-1 winners over Legon Cities in the battle of relegation battlers.

Lions took the lead in the fourth minute through E. Agyeman but the host levelled in the 42nd minute through F. Akoto.

Mohammed Hamzata, however, restored the lead for Accra Lions when he scored on the stroke of halftime.
