THE National Theatre of Ghana has held a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the launch of its newly developed four-year strategic plan starting from 2026-2030.
The meeting brought together institutional partners, industry players, corporate organisations, members of the Board and Management of the National Theatre, as well as the general public, to solicit support and buy-in for the successful implementation of the plan, which is expected to reposition the theatre as a leading hub for the performing arts.
In his address, the Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, Henry Herbert Malm, said the plan outlined a clear pathway to strengthen artistic excellence, expand access to culture, develop creative skills and ensure long-term sustainability in a rapidly changing cultural, technological and economic environment.
He explained that the strategic framework is anchored on four key pillars; sustainability, innovation, attracting strategic collaborators, and inspiring creativity through skills development.
Mr Malm stated that the plan was expected to reposition the theatre as a culturally vibrant, operationally efficient, financially sustainable and globally connected institution.
“We recognise that for some time the Theatre has largely been seen as a space for hiring and events. This strategic plan seeks to redefine that narrative and restore the National Theatre to its core mandate as a centre for creative development and cultural expression,” he noted.
He added that efforts would be made to build a loyal audience base while leveraging digital platforms to extend the theatre’s reach beyond its physical space. “The future of the arts is not only on stage; it is also online and across multiple platforms,” he mentioned.
The Board Chairperson, Madam Amarteorkor Amarteifio, underscored the importance of the strategic plan as a tool for accountability and long-term growth, noting that the board was fully committed to its implementation.
“This is not just a document that will sit on a shelf. It is a working framework that will guide our decisions, inform our investments and shape the future of the National Theatre over the next four years,” she explained.
Madam Amarteifio stressed the need for collaboration in achieving the objectives of the plan and called on stakeholders to support the theatre’s renewed vision. “We cannot do this alone. The success of this strategic plan will depend on partnerships and a shared commitment to developing the creative arts sector. The Theatre belongs to all of us, and we must all play a role in its growth,” she added.
Madam Amarteifio further assured that the strategic plan would serve as a dynamic framework to guide decision-making, inspire confidence and enable the institution to effectively fulfil its mandate.
