NCCE appeals to youth to participate in upcoming district level elections
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on the youth to participate in the upcoming District Level Elections which would come off on December 19, this year in all the 261 districts across the country.
According to the Head of Gender and Youth Programmes at the NCCE, Mrs Abigail Amponsah, the participation of the youth in the elections would contribute to the decision making of the country.
She said these at a youth leadership dialogue organised by the NCCE in Accra yesterday.
The dialogue was on the theme, “NCCE at 30: Building youth leadership for participation in local governance.”
She also urged the youth to equip themselves with information and inform others about the upcoming district level elections and unit committee elections.
That she noted would encourage high voter turn-out which meant that more people agreed in the decision-making process.
“We can also include ourselves in decision making in the country by voting,” she said.
She asked the youth to use their social media platforms to educate the general public and mobilise eligible voters to partake in the election process as it was their civic responsibility.
The chairperson of the NCCE, Ms Kathleen Addy, said that the NCCE was trying to work with young people to go into leadership for the betterment of the democracy in the country
She also said that the dialogue was first of many programmes to be organised by the NCCE.
She asked the youth to vote for the right reasons and consider the criteria in which they voted in order to create a system that benefited everyone.
The co-founder of LEAD Afrique, Mr Michael Ohene-Effah, who spoke on harnessing youth leadership for socio-economic transformation said that when it came to elections, there was the need to elect individuals based on substantial things but not personal and direct gain.
He encouraged the youth to take up leadership positions, adding that leadership had nothing to do with personal attributes.
The Deputy Chairman of Operations, NCCE, Mr Samuel Asare, said that the NCCE looked forward to more webinars to network with other leaders.
