Northern Regional Minister cautions against commentary on Dagbon chieftaincy matters
The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John Mburidiba, has cautioned media practitioners and social media users against commenting on issues concerning the late Ya-Na Abukari II and matters relating to Dagbon tradition and customs.
He warned that the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) was closely monitoring developments and would take action against anyone who undermined the traditions and customs of Dagbon during the mourning period.
Mr Mburidiba gave the warning at the seventh-day mourning and Islamic prayers for the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Friday.
The seventh-day adua formed part of the traditional and Islamic mourning rites following the passing of the late Ya-Na.
He said anyone who sought to disrespect Dagbon culture through traditional or social media platforms would be dealt with in accordance with Dagbon traditions and customs.
Mr Mburidiba urged media practitioners to exercise professionalism and discipline when reporting on the funeral rites of the late Overlord.
He stressed that issues relating to customs, traditions and succession should be handled through the appropriate traditional institutions and not debated on social or mainstream media platforms.
According to him, this was the time for the people of Dagbon and all stakeholders to support the kingmakers in selecting a worthy successor to the late Ya-Na.
Mr Mburidiba further continued that the late Overlord would be remembered for promoting peace, unity, reconciliation and development within the Dagbon Kingdom.
He noted that the government appreciated the invaluable role of traditional authorities in promoting peaceful coexistence, preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage and supporting national development.
The minister assured the people of Dagbon of the government’s continued commitment to working closely with traditional authorities to advance sustainable development and improve the welfare of citizens.
He urged the public, especially the youth, to refrain from publishing misleading or unverified information capable of undermining traditional authority or disturbing the peace and unity in the Dagbon Kingdom.
