Red Cross marks World Day with health walk in Takoradi

The Western Regional branch of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) has organised a health walk in Takoradi to mark this year’s World Red Cross Day, which will climax in Accra on May 8.
The event was held on the theme: ‘United in humanity’.
It also honoured the founder of the International Red Cross Society, Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman and social activist.
Participants, mainly students from Baidoo Addo, Beahu Methodist, Beahu Catholic, St Andrews, Arthur Fisher and Funko schools, walked through some principal streets of Takoradi before ending at the Takoradi Shopping Mall.
The students later engaged in games, first aid competitions and demonstrated life-saving techniques.
Speaking at the event, the National President of the GRCS, Dr Edward Donkoh, said the celebration was in honour of individuals who had made sacrifices, including laying down their lives, to save others.
He stressed that the Red Cross served humanity without discrimination, regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation.
“Let’s help strengthen the Red Cross in our schools and homes. We want to move from 70,000 volunteers to our target of one million. We are impartial and united with a common goal of serving humanity, and we volunteer our services,” he said.
“As this year’s theme says, we cannot do this alone; we must work together in service to humanity,” he said.
The Regional Manager, Mr Ben Acquah, described student participation as encouraging and expressed the hope that the Red Cross would become more visible in schools and workplaces across the country.
He commended the enthusiasm displayed by the students, particularly in first aid and life-saving techniques.
“We hope to do more in building friendships, revitalising and energising our activities, and strengthening our work among school clubs,” he added.
The Regional Chairman, Mr Frank Ofosu-Asante, explained that the health walk was also to remind the public of the continued relevance of the Red Cross and to promote care for humanity, especially for the vulnerable.
The guest speaker, who is also the Chief of Akyereyin in the Ahanta West Municipality, Nana Blay XI, expressed satisfaction that the activities focused on young people.
“Red Cross has a future, and we want to ensure that we achieve the one million volunteer target,” he said.
