47-year-old woman arrested over alleged burial of grandchild

A 47-year-old woman has been arrested at Akyem Koforidua, a suburb of Akyem Akroso in the Asene Manso Akroso District of the Eastern Region for allegedly burying her newborn grandchild alive.

The suspect, identified as Akua Abrokwaa, was arrested together with her 20-year-old daughter, Ernestina Asare, the mother of the newborn.

The two were apprehended by the Akyem Akroso Police following an alarm raised by some residents who reportedly witnessed the alleged burial of the baby.

According to reports, the residents alerted the police, who swiftly intervened and arrested the two women.

The baby was reportedly discovered following the intervention, although details about its condition were not immediately available.

The suspects are currently in police custody at the Akyem Oda Police Station and are assisting the police with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Public Affairs Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP David Fianko-Okyere, confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times.

He said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances leading to the alleged act.
