A-G nominates Xavier Sosu, 2 others to General Legal Council

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has nominated three individuals to serve on the General Legal Counsil.

The three nominees are the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu; a lecturer at the University Of Ghana School Of Law, Mrs Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, and a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Abdul-Bassit Aziz Bamba.

The A-G and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, in a statement signed and issued in Accra said that the nominations were made in accordance with Section 1(2) of the Legal Profession Act, 1960, and Paragraph 2(1)(d) of the First Schedule to the Act.

It stated that the individuals have been chosen to contribute their expertise to the Council, which plays a crucial role in overseeing legal education and professional conduct in the country.

“His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, has been duly informed of the nominations and assured the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, of the Attorney General’s highest consideration in this process,” the statement dated February 28, 2025 added.

Accepting the nomination in a Facebook post, the Madina MP thanked the Attorney-General and President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity.

He said he was ever ready to work with the other members of the General Legal Council and relevant stakeholders to attain the reset agenda of President Mahama.

“I wish to thank the Learned Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana Dr Dominic Ayine, for nominating me to the General Legal Council, “he said.

He said he was grateful to the President, John Dramani Mahama, and the A-G and humbly accept this nomination and promise to work with other Council members and relevant stakeholders to achieve the reset agenda of the President.

“Let’s work together to reform and reset legal education and practice in Ghana to guarantee justice for all and injustice to none,” Mr Xavier Sosu concluded.

The General Legal Council set up in 1960 by The Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32) among other things, regulates the legal profession in the country by overseeing legal education and professional practice of the law, and plays a key role in effective and quality justice delivery
