Assemblies asked to use interventions to enhance livelihoods
Assemblies have been asked to use the
government’s policies, programmes and social interventions to enhance the
livelihoods of their respective communities for the residents to enhance
maximum benefits.
“Assemblies must be committed, dedicated,
determined and resolved to use the government’s policies, programmes and
interventions to improve living standards of our people within the communities
to ensure harnessing to their benefit and ameliorate their plight,” Ernest
Mallet, the District Chief Executive for South Dayi in the Volta Region
stressed.
“We in South
Dayi District Assembly are dedicated, determined, committed and resolved to improving
on the living standards of the people in the district and will ensure full
harnessing of government’s policies, programmes and interventions to their
benefit
by providing basic infrastructure facilities,
services and creating avenues for economic activities to thrive to help
eradicate poverty,” he stated.
Mr Mallet was speaking at the District
Assembly’s Meet-The-Press series at Kpeve, an initiative by the Ministry of
Local Government and Rural Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of
Information to encourage metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies
(MMDAs) to interact with the media to account for their stewardship.
The forum also formed part of the government’s
agenda to promote openness, transparency, accountability, probity,
participation of the citizenry and interest groups.
“Assemblies must be prepared to implement an
annual Popular Participation Plan that seeks to involve interest groups and the
citizenry in the MMDAs in the planning, monitoring, evaluation and review of growth
and development.
“The assembly has also developed a website
as part of its quest to disseminate information and receive feedback from the
various stakeholders and the citizenry to enable it perform its mandate
effectively and efficiently, the Client Service Unit has also been strengthened
to provide ready information to stakeholders and the citizenry in anticipation
of the operationalisation of the Right to Information Act,” Mr Mallet
