Ayawaso West denies permits for GIMPA-Toyota road projects

THE Ayawaso West Municipality Assembly has denied issuing building permits to private developers undertaking construction works along the GIMPA-Toyota road within the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Michael Mensah, said the construction activities on lands belonging to the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, were being supervised by the university’s Development Office.

He explained that the Assembly had encountered challenges with the university regarding building permits, as UG had indicated that its Development Office was responsible for supervising developments on its lands.

“Let me put it on record that we’ve had issues with the University of Ghana when it comes to building permits. They have indicated that they also have a Development Office and, as a result, all those buildings have been supervised or are being supervised by the University of Ghana Development Office,” Dr Mensah said.

He made the disclosure when the Assembly appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Local Government and Rural Development during a public hearing yesterday.

The hearing formed part of the Committee’s consideration of the 2025 Annual Statements by Audit Committees and its engagement with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Regional Coordinating Councils and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Dr Mensah said the Assembly had officially written to UG, Legon, concerning the ongoing construction works by private developers and the damage being caused to roads within the municipality.

He attributed the deterioration of the GIMPA-Toyota road partly to inadequate drainage systems, coupled with the ongoing construction activities. Read More
