Closer collaboration key to Ghana’s digital transformation – Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff, Dr Julius Debrah, has called for closer collaboration among industry, academia and government to build a vibrant Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector capable of developing solutions tailored to Ghana’s needs.

He said such collaboration would help harness the expertise, creativity and resources of key stakeholders to develop practical digital solutions to drive national development.

Dr Debrah made the call in remarks delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration and Finance, Nana Oye Bampoe-Addo, at the opening of the 2026 National ICT Week at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana.

The four-day programme, organised by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), is being held on the theme: “Innovation at Scale: Creating Opportunities Across Ghana’s Digital Ecosystem.”

It brought together government officials, students, technology companies, innovators, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in the ICT sector.

Dr Debrah said Ghana’s digital transformation was entering “a new and more demanding phase”, requiring deliberate efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure, develop human capital, build capable institutions and establish a regulatory environment that encouraged responsible innovation.

“With the right policies, infrastructure, institutions, skills and governance frameworks in place, Ghana can harness technology as a powerful instrument for economic development, job creation, innovation and empowered public-sector service delivery,” he said.

He said the government’s approach focused on expanding digital infrastructure, particularly in underserved communities, digitalising public services, investing in digital skills and entrepreneurship, and strengthening cybersecurity and data protection.

Dr Debrah cited the launch of Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy in April 2026 and the proposed $250 million AI computing centre as key steps towards positioning the country to benefit from emerging technologies.

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, in remarks delivered by his Deputy and Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, said the government was committed to building a coordinated, interoperable and innovation-driven digital ecosystem.

He said the Ministry was targeting 70 per cent 5G coverage by the end of 2028, while reviewing spectrum policies and legislation to make Ghana’s digital environment attractive to investment and responsive to technological change.

The Chairperson of the NITA Governing Board, Ms Estelle Akofio-Sowah, said Ghana’s digital future would depend not only on the technologies developed but, more importantly, on the country’s ability to take successful innovations beyond individual projects and scale them into sustainable solutions.

The Acting Director-General of NITA, Nana Yaw Amoah-Yeboah, said more than 600 government institutions and assemblies had been onboarded onto the Smart Workplace platform.

He said NITA was also advancing the electronic document wallet ecosystem and developing frameworks for data centres and cloud services.
