Dean expresses misgivings over MPs near-clash in Parliament

Professor Kofi Abotsi, the Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School, has expressed misgivings over the near-fight incident that happened in Parliament among some Members of Parliament (MPs).

He observed that the near-clash between the Majority and Minority in Parliament reinforced the perception that the legislature was pushing itself into irrelevance and the situation was worrying as the citizenry were the ultimate losers.

Earlier in Parliament, a photo used by the Majority Caucus in Parliament on the issue of tidal waves, which had devastated communities in the Volta Region, nearly started a fight between the two sides at a press conference.

Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, showed a photo of scenes from the disaster caused by the tidal waves to the media but Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor MPsfor Ellembelle in the Western Region and South Dayi in the Volta Region respectively, started heckling him.

According to them, MrAfenyo-Markin was misinforming the media with the picture however, the clash occurred towards the end of the presser when Yusif Sulemana,MP for Bole Bamboi in the Savannah Region, came to snatch the image from Mr Afenyo-Markin, and handed it over to Mr Dafeamekpor.

Stephen Amoah, MP for Nhyeaso in the Ashanti Region, then followed up to retrieve the image from Mr Dafeamekpor which led to the clash, Mr Afenyo-Markin was then seen asking Mr Dafeamekpor to hand over the image to him and the latter obliged and Mr Afenyo-Markin left.

Mr Dafeamekpor subsequently apologised to the Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Afenyo-Markin over the clash, admitting that he erred. –myjoyonline.com
