EARTH Summit challenges youth to take action on environment

THE youth have been urged to acquire practical skills in environmental protection and waste management to help address environmental challenges in their homes, schools and communities.
The call was made at the maiden Ghana EARTH Summit, organised by the Planeteer Alliance, the youth arm of the Captain Planet Foundation.
The summit exposed participants to practical activities aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging young people to take action to protect their surroundings.
Opening the summit in Accra yesterday, the host and Planeteer, Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari, welcomed participants and guests and emphasised the important role of young people in protecting the environment.
She also highlighted opportunities available to young people through the network and encouraged them to participate actively in activities that promoted environmental protection.
A tree-planting session led by the Head of Science at Mary Mother of Good Counsel School, Mr Asare Kuffour, formed part of the practical activities.
Mr Kuffour explained the importance of trees and outlined practical considerations for planting and nurturing them before participants took part in a tree-planting exercise.
The participants were subsequently given Veitchia palm seedlings to take home and plant as part of efforts to extend the initiative beyond the summit.
The summit also focused on responsible waste management, with the leader of the BuzStop Boys, Heneba Kwadwo Safo, leading a practical session on source separation.
Participants were taught how to separate waste at source and how proper separation could contribute to improved waste management.
Games and other practical activities were incorporated into the session to help participants understand the concept and apply it in their everyday lives.
The organisers said the activities were designed to move young people beyond awareness of environmental challenges and encourage them to take practical steps to address them.
The maiden Ghana EARTH Summit therefore provided participants with practical knowledge and skills they could apply to environmental protection and responsible waste management in their homes, schools and communities.
