EC annuls re-run NPP Walewale parliamentary primaries
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday annulled the Walewale Constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.
The ballot papers, belonging to EC, were vandalised by the aggrieved party supporters of the two candidates.
The North East Regional Director of the EC, Mr Gabriel Manu, announced this to the journalist in Walwale after the counting was disrupted.
He said there were of the view that the integrity of some of the ballot papers had been compromised.
This, according to him, was difficult for them to determine the actual winner of the primaries.
“Upon seeing the difficulties in the ballot papers, we quickly informed the leadership of the NPP that they we cannot declare the winner,” he stated.
He indicated that it was an internal elections and for now they would be waiting on the leadership of the party to come out with their findings and they would abide by it.
The Tamale High Court on Monday September 2, declared the elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary primaries results in the Walewale Constituency of the North East Region as null and void, and ordered the party to organised a fresh primaries for the constituency.
It would be recalled that the EC on January 27, 2024 declared Dr Kabiru Tia Mahama as the Walewale NPP candidate elect after he had 345 votes against Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuweira with 338 votes.
The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuwera Abudu, and also the former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, filed an injunction in court to restrain the elected candidate for the constituency, Dr Kabiru Tia Mahama, from holding himself as candidate-elect for the con-stituency.
The other two contenders were Tahiru Sham-una and Jangdow Mahama who had 145 and one votes, respectively.
