The Electoral Commission (EC) will today begin the nationwide exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register at polling stations across all 269 districts.
It would provide an opportunity for registered voters to verify their details, including name, age, sex, polling station, and photograph as recorded during the registration process.
Voters can request amendments, changes, or insertions to their details and confirm their polling stations for Election Day.
The exercise, which runs daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., will continue until Tuesday, August 27.
This initiative is a crucial part of the EC’s preparations for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, Deputy Chair of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare, emphasised that the exercise is focused on refining the provisional voters register to ensure its robustness and credibility for the upcoming elections.
Dr Asare explained that the current voter register is provisional and that this exhibition exercise aims to correct any errors before the register is finalised for December’s elections.
“By provisional, we mean that the register is not yet final. After the exhibition exercise, the voters register will be accurate and credible,” he said.
He said requests made at the exhibition centres are recorded on exhibition forms and in the voters register, which are then sent to the District Office for processing.
He said District Registration Review Officers (District Court Magistrates) have been appointed in all 268 districts to handle the provisional voters registers, complaints, and objections that arise during the exhibition.
Dr Asare warned that registered voters who do not bring their Voter ID Cards would only be able to verify their details but cannot request any amendments.
He also noted that the Commission has dispatched all necessary materials for the exhibition exercise to the regions.
He said individuals who were not qualified to register as voters can visit the centres to have their names removed from the voters register, as it is illegal to be listed if not qualified.
Dr Asare reiterated the EC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, transparent, inclusive, and credible elections.
“We urge all stakeholders and the general public to support the Commission in delivering successful presidential and parliamentary elections”.
In a related development, the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has urged all political parties to use due process within the law to address challenges that may arise from the exercise.
He said this when he interacted briefly with journalists after a meeting between the security agencies and the EC on today’s exhibition exercise
