The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s electoral system to sustain public confidence in free, fair and transparent elections.
The Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr Bossman Asare, said the commission was focused on refining its operations to safeguard the credibility of the country’s democratic process.
He made the remarks in Accra yesterday when the leadership of the Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO) paid a courtesy call on the commission.
The visit, the group explained, was aimed at encouraging closer collaboration between the EC and citizens through consistent public engagement on electoral issues.
Dr Asare noted that Ghana’s electoral system had gained recognition as one of the most credible on the African continent, largely due to the commission’s independence and transparency over the years.
He said the EC would continue to strengthen its systems and processes to ensure that public trust in the electoral process remained high.
Speaking on behalf of the organisation, the Women Organiser of UFO, Hajia Bintu, called on the commission to intensify civic education and sustain regular engagement with the public beyond election periods.
She said consistent interaction with citizens, particularly political parties would help address misconceptions about the commission’s work and ease tensions often associated with elections.
Hajia Bintu said the EC should maintain its public awareness campaigns throughout the year, not only during election seasons, as this would help clear misunderstandings and promote peaceful electoral processes.
Also speaking, Hajia Saana stressed that continuous education on electoral procedures would encourage informed participation in the democratic process.
She commended the EC for its role in Ghana’s democratic development since 1992, describing the commission as a key institution in safeguarding peace and stability.
Hajia Saana said the work of the EC must be supported by all Ghanaians, as credible and transparent elections remained the foundation of the country’s democracy.
As part of the visit, the organisation presented a citation to the commission in recognition of its contribution to Ghana’s democratic and peaceful development over the years.
