Ga South constituency NPP, NDC commit to peace

In the lead-up to the 2024 general election, both the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC), have committed to peace and unity in the Ga South constituency.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Mr Sylvester Tetteh, and the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Mr Felix Akwetey Okle, have both assured the chiefs and residents of the area that they would engage in a peaceful, respectful campaign and would accept the results in good faith.

This commitment was made during a recent gathering organised by the Coastal Chiefs for Development in collaboration with the Ga South Municipal Assembly and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) under the theme: ‘Peace Campaign for the Upcoming Election 2024.’

The event brought together chiefs, political leaders and opinion leaders from the municipality to forge a collective commitment to peace before, during and after the elections.

In his remarks, Mr Tetteh emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring adherence to electoral laws, urging citizens to reject violence and insults.

He also reassured the public that he would not interfere in the work of the police, highlighting the need for political leaders to guide their supporters in maintaining lawful conduct during the elections.

“I have a singular responsibility together with the chiefs and security agencies to ensure that the people are in peace and abide by the rules and regulations governing elections,” he explained.

“I always supervise peaceful elections and do not interfere in the work of the police. The Chiefs must guide the youth against breaking the laws during elections,” he stressed.

On his part, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Mr Felix Akwetey Okle, reiterated the need to protect the country and apply the essence of democracy which encouraged dialogue.

“We should be committed to peace and nobody should put the laws in their hands. We also plead with the police command to ensure that there is law and order at all times,” he stated.

“Let us be guided by our utterances, devoid of insults and be mindful of the importance of peaceful coexistence to development,” he added.

Oshiyie Mantse, Nii Kofi Akrashie, also encouraged leaders of the political parties to accept the results and guide their support not to engage in any form of violence.

“We plead for peace and though we understand that his year’s elections would be keenly contested, we must all commit to unity after the contest,” he stated.

“It is imperative that we prioritise peace, unity and understanding. We must recognise that diversity is strength and not weakness as it helps build a better Ghana. Exercise your right to vote peacefully and reject all forms of violence,” he stressed.

During these few days to the elections, he urged political leaders to conduct their campaigns in a very decent matter while urging the media to remain adequate as well as security agencies must be impartial.
