Ghana stun South Africa to reach U-20 WWC fourth round
Priscilla Mensah’s second-half goal propelled Ghana’s Black Princesses into the fourth round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (WWC) qualifiers.
Coming off a 2-2 aggregate draw with South Africa’s Basetsana at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday, Ghana faced a challenging task to advance.
The Black Princesses dominated early exchanges, creating several chances, but were repeatedly denied by South Africa’s goalkeeper. Precious Asante came close just before halftime, but her shot was parried to safety.
After halftime, an injury to Mary Amponsah saw Priscilla Mensah take her place. In the 63rd minute, a solo run from Jessica on the wing set up Mensah, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give Ghana the lead.
South Africa threatened in the 78th minute, but Jenna stood firm, preserving Ghana’s advantage. The Black Princesses held on until the final whistle, securing progression to the next round.
Ghana now aims to secure their eighth consecutive appearance at the biennial U-20 Women’s World Cup, scheduled for September in Poland.
