Janiza rites held for late Ayawaso East MP at National Mosque

Scores of mourners, including sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), gathered at the National Mosque in Kanda to participate in the Janiza rites for Naser Toure Mahama, the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, who passed away on Sunday after a brief illness.

The Janiza, an Islamic funeral ceremony that includes prayers, washing, shrouding, and burial rituals, was led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and monitored by The Ghanaian Times. Following the ceremony, the deceased was laid to rest at the Madina Cemetery in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The solemn occasion was attended by the late MP’s family, political figures, constituents, and religious leaders, all of whom paid tribute to his life and service. Many mourners expressed shock at his sudden passing, describing him as a man devoted to the welfare of his constituents.

The NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Organiser, Mr Anthony Nukepnu, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, “He came to politics with a genuine heart, a very committed way of doing things, and helping the society. For the years he has been in Parliament, he really lived up to the expectations of the people and the Party.”

Mr Nukepnu also highlighted the late MP’s contributions as caucus chairman for the Eastern Region, emphasising his dedication to unity and effective communication among members.

The MP for Ashiaman, Mr Ernest Henry Norgbey, described Naser Toure Mahama as a calm and wise figure, saying, “Honourable Naser was such a fine gentleman. Very calm, and every time he spoke, he would use his wisdom.”

Parliament and the entire Parliamentary Service issued a statement expressing condolences to the bereaved family and constituents, describing him as a hardworking public servant who served the country with diligence, integrity, and responsibility.

A bye-election is expected to be conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) to elect a new MP for the Ayawaso East constituency following the late MP’s passing.
