KNUST Marks 59th Congregation with Record 221 PhD Graduates

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Saturday celebrated its 59th Congregation with a historic academic milestone, awarding Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees to 221 candidates. The ceremony was graced by the Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku‑Agyemang, and chaired by the Chancellor and King of Asanteman, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In his opening remarks, the Asantehene praised the Vice President, describing her as “a Vice President in whom I am well pleased,” while urging the completion of the stalled KNUST Teaching Hospital project. He expressed confidence that Professor Opoku‑Agyemang would champion its delivery.

Following the congregation, the Vice President commissioned four flagship facilities designed to strengthen KNUST’s academic and entrepreneurial ecosystem: a modern analytical laboratory, a university gift shop, Kings Square, and a water bottling plant. She emphasised that these investments demonstrate a collective commitment to expanding opportunities for research, innovation, and enterprise development, positioning KNUST as a leader in Ghana’s scientific and industrial advancement.

Professor Opoku‑Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s support for institutions that drive national development, linking the facility upgrades to broader priorities, including inclusive growth, value addition to natural resources, and self-sufficiency in critical sectors such as food production.

The congregation drew senior government officials, university leadership, graduands, and their families, highlighting KNUST’s pivotal role in advancing research excellence and technological innovation. Among the PhD recipients was veteran broadcaster Kwame Adinkrah of Pure FM, whose thesis on “Visual Pollution and Urban Livability in Kumasi” contributed to ongoing discourse on sustainable urban planning.

The ceremony concluded with expressions of gratitude from KNUST authorities to both the Chancellor and the Vice President for their visionary leadership and commitment to the university’s growth and Ghana’s development.
