Kumasi hosts 29th GJA media awards

The 29th edition of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards is scheduled to take place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on November 8, 2025, under the auspices of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The awards night will be preceded with a welcome reception to be held at the Lancaster Hotel in Kumasi on Friday, November 7, 2025.
This was disclosed by the President of the GJA, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, at the launch of the awards ceremony in Accra yesterday.
The occasion was also used to outdoor the 9-member Awards Committee and Planning Committee of the event. Both set of committees were inaugurated by the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
This year’s awards celebration will be held under the theme, “Safeguarding Ghana’s future: The role of the media in promoting peace, security, and the fight against galamsey.”
Speaking at the launch, Mr Ofosu noted that the government was committed to the protection of journalists in the country and pledged its support to the association. According to him, the government was working to ensure that the media landscape, both the traditional and new media landscape, were regulated.
Mr Ofosu said that the government did not intend to curb media freedom through the regulation of the media space but to advance it.
That notwithstanding, Mr Ofosu acknowledged the challenges the journalists in the country faced, including poor conditions of service and inadequate logistics.
He urged the association to view personnel who operated in the new media landscape as important actors in the information dissemination process and complemented the work of the traditional media.
Mr Ofosu encouraged journalists to uphold ethical media standards while holding government officials accountable.
For his part, Mr Dwumfour said that this year’s awards to be held in Kumasi would serve as a convergence of tradition, wisdom and professionalism.
He noted that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II embodied the values of peace, justice, and leadership, which lied at the heart of responsible journalism.
“The decision to hold the awards in Kumasi is not merely a change of venue. It is a symbolic statement of inclusivity and signifies the commitment of the GJA to make it national and one that is felt in every region of the country,” Mr Dwumfour said.
He said that the association would cater to the accommodation and logistics of journalists who would be attending the awards ceremony.
In addition, he challenged the media to impact society through responsible and accurate reporting and move beyond “headlines.”
The Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, Mr Alex Apau Dadey, urged the media to develop a strong partnership with the private sector and corporate organisations to advance the cause of the association and promote good democratic governance.
