National security remains government priority – Deputy Minister

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, has reassured Ghanaians that the country’s borders are secure from external threats, praising security personnel for their unwavering dedication.

Speaking at the celebration of Russian Fatherland Defenders Day on Tuesday in Accra, Mr Genfi commended the men and women of Ghanaian security services for their professionalism in safeguarding the nation, particularly as instability affects neighbouring countries.

He emphasised that the government would continue to strengthen the country’s security apparatus to deter any potential threats. “We are aware of the insecurities within the Sahel region,” he said, noting that Ghana remains vigilant and prepared to prevent incursions.

Mr Genfi highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, revealing that Ghana has enhanced collaboration with neighbouring countries through defence partnerships, intelligence sharing, and joint training exercises.

Also speaking at the event, Captain Victor Dolgerov, Military, Air, and Naval Attaché of the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Ghana, explained the significance of Russian Fatherland Defenders Day. He said the celebration honours soldiers who have fought to secure Russia’s freedom and independence.

“Soldiers serve their Fatherland without hesitation, protecting their land with courage and determination. The people honour the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices of both ordinary fighters and their commanders,” Captain Dolgerov said.

He further reflected on the global significance of Russia’s military history, noting that victories such as those in the Great Patriotic War continue to hold importance not only for Russia but for the world.

Captain Dolgerov also commended Ghanaian security personnel for their commitment to peace and underscored the strong diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and Russia, which continue to benefit both nations.
