NGO launches initiative to promote access to safe drinking water

 KICK For Water, an initiative to help promote access to potable and safe drinking water through soccer and entertainment, was yesterday launched in Accra.

Launched by Kick 4Street Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, also seeks to provide clean water to vulnerable commu­nities across the country.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kick 4Street Foundation, Mr Charles Adu, emphasised that accessing clean water was a fundamental human right to every citizen living in the country.

Therefore, to safeguard this right, he said everyone needed to work together collectively in order to ensure water bodies were safe and clean while make water avail­able to waterlogged communities.

Mr Adu added that to make sure all communities had equal opportu­nities, the organisation was collab­orating with Ghana Association of Elected Assembly Member to deal with issue related to water quality and availability.

“The association thought it wise to use football and entertainment to raise funds to provide clean water to various communities in the country since illegal mining has destroyed 90 per cent of our water bodies,” he noted.

Additionally, the CEO said through these entertainment and soccer, it would also help promote the country’s tourism, culture and heritage.

“Also, one of the things we want to use this platform to champion is environmental sustainability and climate change, we know that the youth, especially this generation like soccer and entertainment, so we use this platform to edu­cate them on the challenges and dangers of climate change and also the importance of environmental sustainability.”

“Through Kick for Water and then the Regional Film Festival, we aim to promote sustainable prac­tices, raise awareness about climate change, and inspire individuals to take action,” he said.

He appealed to government, cor­porate bodies, philanthropies and individuals to donate and support the Kick for Water project to make water clean and accessible for all.

The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who was represented by the Paramount Chief of Abola Traditional Area, Nii Ahene Nunoo III, emphasised the importance of clean water to human life, stating that, “water is life and everyone needs clean and potable water.”

“It is our fundamental human rights for each and every one of us to have clean water, and I will com­mend Mr Adu for launching this initiative using Sports and enter­tainment to help use get clean, safe and accessible water in our homes and communities,” he outlined.

The launch also featured the opening of Regional Fun-Fair Festival, an initiative to celebrate regional fun fair festivals in order to raise funds and also Ghanafest programme.
