NPP, NDC petition CID over alleged unsavory comments

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service over alleged unsavory comments.

While the NPP has petitioned the Police to arrest, investigate and prosecute former President John Mahama and the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia for treasonable and offensive conduct, the NDC has also petitioned the Police to arrest and prosecute Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture for ‘reckless’ comments.

The former president prior to the 2020 general election stated that the NDC will face the NPP‘boot-for-boot’ if the NPP continued to intimidate NDC members with hoodlums and vigilante groups and the upcoming 2024 elections will be a ‘do or die’ affair for the NDC.

Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the NPP, who sent the petition explained that such conducts were contrary to Sections 180 and 207 of the Criminal Offenses Act, 1960 (ACT 29) respectively, which offences were to be dealt with pursuant to Section 1 of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (ACT 30).

“Former President Mahama, without regard to his position as a statesman, proudly touted across various platforms the revolutionary root of the party and their unparalleled capacity when it came to unleashing violence for political gain.

“His comments to the effect that the NDC’s approach to the elections in 2024 would be do or die and boot-for-boot which invariably, speaks to their unwavering resolve to use fair or foul means to procure electoral advantage regardless of the consequences.

“When he was asked during a media interview what he meant by boot-for-boot and do or die, and whether with the benefit of hindsight, he would want to retract those incendiary comments, the former president insisted he meant what he stated and was never going to retract,” Nana Boakye indicated.

On the part of Mr Nketia, he intimated that Mr Nketia had repeatedly “threatened fire and brimstone” to ensure victory for the NDC in the 2024 elections.

Nana Boakye indicated that Mr Nketia said the elections would be bloody and his party was willing and ready to sacrifice lives to ensure their victory in 2024 and was on record to have stated unequivocally during his victory speech following his election as the National Chairman of the NDC, it was time for members of the party to continue the fight to win the second Independence for Ghana.

According to him such remarks posed risk to peace and stability of the state which had potential of inciting their supporters to disturb the constitutional order by resorting to some unorthodox and extra-constitutional means of changing a democratically elected government.
