The 2025 Drills Edition of Exercise Tigers Path of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) began yesterday at Abenase in the Eastern Region.
The four-day exercise aims to test the operational readiness of GAF command units in jungle warfare, covering tactical drills, offensive maneuvers, range work, obstacle crossing, battle procedures, first aid, assault river crossing, platoon administration, marksmanship, physical fitness, confidence building, helicopter vectoring, marshalling drills, and patrolling techniques.
About 210 troops from six units, made up of the Northern, Southern, and Central Commands, Support Services, the Air Force, and the Navy, are participating in the exercise.
The exercise began with a search and rescue operation spanning approximately 73 kilometres, the distance between Accra and Sogakope, where troops navigated the jungle to locate fallen and wounded combatants from helicopter patrols.
The exercise has been modified to address current security challenges. Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, the guest of honour, urged participants to uphold the highest professional standards and remain alert to contemporary threats.
He emphasised the importance of teamwork, highlighting collaboration among the Army, Air Force, and Navy to build trust, strengthen inter-service cooperation, and enhance joint peacekeeping efforts. “Push yourselves beyond limits to enhance combat readiness,” he charged.
Major General Gbetanu also called on umpires and commanders to enforce strict safety measures to protect personnel and enable organisers to evaluate performance and lessons learned.
He commended traditional authorities and assembly officials for their support of the Jungle Warfare School, noting that the country’s security challenges, including instability in neighbouring states, require total collaboration.
The exercise provides a platform to strengthen the GAF’s capabilities, build mutual understanding among units, and ensure preparedness for evolving security threats.
