Police arrest 12 robbery suspects, three linked to asawase chief murder

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 suspects in connection with a series of robbery cases in the Ashanti Region, with three of them linked to the murder of a Kusasi chief at Asawase in Kumasi.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in a statement, explained that the arrests were made through intelligence led operations carried out across the region.

Police named the suspects as Abdalah Alhassan, Jemini Usman also known as Babamu, Aminu Iddrisu also known as 0244, Illiasu Dauda, Majeed Issaka Jibril, Gafaru Ibrahim, Mohammed Mumuni also known as Mama, Tanko Malik also known as Bronze, Mohammed Bawa also known as Mallam, Dramani Musah, Suleman Yasir Arafat also known as Obasanjo, and Ashaidu Sumbieda also known as Eyeshadow.

According to the police, three suspects Jamil Usman also known as Babamu or Guru, Suleman Yasir Arafat and Ashaidu Sumbieda have been directly linked to the killing of the Kusasi chief at Asawase.

The police added that a Toyota Corolla with registration number GC 439 21, believed to have been used by the suspects, has been retrieved.

During the operation, two other suspects, Illiasu Bawa and David Aheto, sustained gunshot wounds and were later pronounced dead.

Police recovered several weapons and ammunition from the suspects. These include two AK 47 rifles, one pump action gun, two pistols, 44 rounds of 32 ammunition and 24 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The statement noted that one suspect, identified as Illiasu also known as Abodam, is currently on the run. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest him.

The Ghana Police Service assured the public that it remains committed to fighting crime and maintaining safety, and urged anyone with information on the suspect at large to assist with investigations.
