Police investigate death of 3 children in Tamale
THE Northern Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the deaths of three children whose bodies were found in the boot of a vehicle at Koblimahagu Zoo in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region.
The children, aged between three and seven years, were reported missing after allegedly leaving home to attend Islamic classes, with their bodies later discovered inside a black Hyundai Tucson whose owner has since been arrested to assist the investigation.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, which identified the deceased as Dauda Abdul Aziz, three, Saani Alsharaf, five, and Dauda Fadilan, seven.
It said the children allegedly left home at about 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, to attend Islamic classes but failed to return home.
The statement added that efforts by community members to locate them proved unsuccessful until about 5 a.m. on Monday, when their bodies were discovered inside the boot of a black Hyundai Tucson with registration number AS 1770-14.
It further explained that the police immediately proceeded to the scene where the vehicle was found stuck in mud on a road leading to the area.
According to the statement, a preliminary inspection of the vehicle revealed that the driver’s door and the rear passenger door behind the driver’s seat were open, while the other doors, including the boot, were locked.
The investigations again established that the vehicle belonged to a personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service, who indicated that the vehicle had been stuck in the mud for the past five days.
The individual has since been arrested and is being taken to Accra to assist the investigation, the command said.
The Inspector General of Police has also deployed a special team comprising homicide investigators, crime scene experts and intelligence officers to Tamale to support the Northern Regional Police Command.
The police have secured the vehicle for further forensic examination as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The statement noted that the outcome of the autopsy, together with the ongoing investigations, was expected to provide further information on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The police assured the public that all necessary investigative steps were being taken to determine what led to the deaths of the three children.
The Command therefore urged the public to remain calm as investigations continued and assured that further updates would be communicated.
