The Central North Regional Police Command has rescued a 30 year old man, Bismarck Amo, who was allegedly kidnapped and subjected to severe torture over an alleged financial dispute.
The police also arrested four suspects in connection with the incident after an intelligence led operation resulted in the victim being rescued and the alleged kidnapping syndicate disrupted.
The operation, code named ‘Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators’, was launched after the victim’s family reported the matter to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Assin Fosu on September 9, 2026, after paying GH¢19,500 in ransom.
A statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Central North Regional Police Command said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident started on September 3, 2026, after Mr Amo allegedly defrauded one of the suspects, Mavis Badu Acheampong, of an unspecified amount of money.
According to the police, Ms Acheampong allegedly connived with her husband, a senior military officer currently outside the country, and lured Mr Amo from Assin Fosu to Kumasi through a telephone call.
Upon his arrival in Kumasi, Ms Acheampong, with the assistance of Charles Doku, Oteng Baffour and other accomplices who remained at large, allegedly kidnapped Mr Amo and took him to her private residence.
The victim was allegedly held and severely tortured for five days, with the suspects filming the abuse and sending the footage to his family to pressure them for more ransom.
The suspects allegedly demanded GH¢45,000, received GH¢19,500 through mobile money, and threatened to kill Mr Amo if an additional GH¢30,500 was not paid, while using their own phones to evade police tracking.
Following the complaint, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohonu coordinated the deployment of specialised police teams, leading to the interception of the suspects on September 11 when they attempted to move the victim to another location after realising that the police were closing in on them.
Police tactical teams intercepted the suspects while they were transporting Mr Amo and rescued him after the kidnappers allegedly instructed a driver to abandon him by the roadside.
The victim was found partially unconscious, covered in blood and with severe bruises across his body.
He was immediately rushed to a medical facility, where he remained admitted under police escort and received treatment for his injuries.
The four suspects, including two teachers, a security guard and an electrician, all residents of Breman UGC, were in police custody and being processed for court.
The police said a manhunt was ongoing for the senior military officer allegedly connected to the incident and other accomplices who remained at large.
The Command cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that financial loss or personal grievances did not justify kidnapping, torture or extortion.
It assured the public that the Police Service would continue to use intelligence led operations to track down criminals, dismantle organised criminal networks and bring perpetrators to justice.
