Tamale School of Hygiene students urged to lead environmental sustainability

The Municipal Chief Executive for Sagnarigu Municipality, Mr AbdulaiImoro Gong, has urged the students of School of Hygiene in Tamale of the Northern Region to take a leading role in advancing environmental sustainability and public health across the country.

He said the work of environmental officers in this country was a crucial one hence the need for them to be well placed to effectively do their work well.

The MCE stated this here on Tuesday in Tamale at the launch of the School’s SRC Week celebration.

The programme was held under on the theme: ‘Sustainability Starts with Us: The Role of Environmental Health Students in Our Modern Ghana.’

Mr Gong in his speech applauded the students for selecting the theme for the programme.

According to him, this was timely and reflective of the nation’s current environmental and public health challenges.

The MCE stated that sustainability was now a practical responsibility for individuals, communities, and institutions across the country.

He stressed that climate change, poor sanitation, ineffective waste management, and emerging public health threats required urgent, attention and sustained action.

Mr Gong said the environment challenges in this country was a major concern to every citizen in this country

“Every citizen needs to contribute to ensure that the environment issues get resolved quickly across all communities in the country” Mr Gong stated.

The MCE also told the environmental health students that they were future professionals, advocates, and agents of change who would bridge the gap between knowledge and practice.

Mr Gong mentioned that their contribution was essential in addressing sanitation challenges and promoting healthier communities across various communities in the country.

He said persistent sanitation issues within Sagnarigu Municipality, including improper waste disposal and environmental degradation, continued to fuel preventable diseases such as cholera and malaria.

This, he emphasised, were not only environmental concerns but also serious public health emergencies that demand proactive solutions.

He called on the students to educate communities on hygiene, champion clean environments, and promote sustainable innovations.

The MCE assured the students of the assembly readiness to continue to support initiatives that would promote environmental health and sustainability in various communities in the municipality.

He also encouraged the students to participate in community outreach programmes in order to solve real-life environmental challenges in the area.

The MCE, however, charged the SRC to ensure that the week-long celebration goes beyond social activities to include impactful programmes such as clean-up exercises, public education campaigns, and innovative environmental projects.

He, therefore, urged the students to embrace their roles as ambassadors of environmental health and to be bold, passionate, and committed to excellence in their field of profession.
