THE TDC Ghana Limited Development Corporation (TDC) has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with the government to alleviate the housing shortfall in the nation.
In this regard, TDC, previously known as the Tema Development Corporation, has proposed several initiatives to expand its housing projects into the Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, Western, and Central regions.
Currently, the housing deficit in the country exceeds two million, with the government persistently searching for partners to assist in diminishing this number.
The Managing Director of TDC, Mr Courage Nunekpeku, revealed this during a visit to the palace of the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, as well as an inspection tour of a 1,800-acre land acquired by the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources (WHWR) in Ho.
He said the decision to broaden its scope beyond Greater Accra was made to help tackle accommodation challenges in both the districts and regions.
He explained that the purpose of the visit was to assess the land and prepare for the commencement of the project, which he emphasised would certainly address the housing needs of the populace.
Mr Nunekpeku stated that the decision by his organisation to offer the necessary affordable housing for Ghanaians outside of Tema was aimed at leveraging the technical expertise of the TDC to meet the housing demands of the people in the regions.
The Director of Works and Housing at the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Mr Ebenezer Sam, explained that it was government’s policy to extend housing projects to the regions and the districts, and urged communities to support the project.
Mr Sam observed that the project, which would definitely address the problems associated with accommodation involving workers like nurses, teachers and doctors among others in the country, was the decisive solution to the problem.
For his part, Togbe Afede lauded the TDC’s decision to extend its housing project to cover the regions, and described the move as a bold decision, but was quick to add that it was long overdue.
Togbe Afede said housing has become a major national development challenge, which should not be left in the hands of the government alone, and stressed the need for local and foreign investors to support the government in addressing the problem.
According to the chief, when work starts on the project, it would not only provide decent and affordable houses for the people but would also provide jobs for the teeming unemployed skilled youths, which would mitigate the unemployment problem in the region and the country in general.
Togbe Afede said “This is the second major news we are hearing within one week in the Volta Region, the first one was the ‘Big Push Project’ and the second is the housing project to ensure that the housing needs of our people in the region will be met. This will bring happiness to the people,’’ he stressed.
He said traditional authorities were prepared to support the housing project in the Volta Region to ensure that the housing needs of the people were met.
