The East Legon Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects, Aaron Mensah and an accomplice known only as Raster, for allegedly assaulting a teacher at Bethel Presbyterian Junior High School at Otano in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The action follows a two-day ultimatum issued by the Greater Accra Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), warning that teachers would withdraw their services if the suspects are not produced and arrested.
The ultimatum was announced at an emergency meeting convened by the Adentan Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ms Ellah Christine Esinam Nongo, to defuse tensions.
The meeting was attended by the Legon District Police Commander, GNAT officials, district GNAT secretaries, representatives of the Presbyterian Educational Unit, parents and community leaders.
The suspects, including Mensah, a former JHS Two student who dropped out last year, are alleged to have attacked Mr Abdela Mohammed, a Mathematics and ICT teacher, on Monday, April 13, after he prevented them from stealing students’ bags during a municipal mock examination.
Mr Mohammed told The Ghanaian Times that the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. while final-year students were writing their Religious and Moral Education paper.
He said he noticed suspicious movement in a classroom where students had left their bags and confronted Mensah, whom he caught searching through them.
According to him, Mensah initially left the school after being challenged but returned with an accomplice and assaulted him.
He was later rescued by the headmistress and a colleague and reported the case to the police and GNAT.
The Regional GNAT Secretary, Mr Cosmos Ennu Kwaw, condemned the attack, stressing the need to protect teachers and demanding the suspects be produced by April 23.
The Legon District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Bawah Alhassan, said the police had leads and urged the community to assist with information.
Ms Nongo appealed for calm, noting that the examination was meant to prepare students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scheduled for May 4, 2026.
Meanwhile, a police source has confirmed the arrest of one suspect.
