President John Dramani Mahama yesterday led a national prayer and thanksgiving service to give glory to God for his mercies on the country in an increasingly volatile region.
“As a nation, we offer this simple and sincere prayer; Thank You Lord. Thank you for what you have done – protecting Ghana in times of crisis. Thank you for what you continue to do. Rekindling our hope, restoring our strength and thank you for what you’ll do – leading us into a future of peace, justice and abundance.

“When we look across our continent, and the world, we see conflicts, disaster, instability and rising despair. However, here in Ghana, we remain an oasis of peace despite our challenges. That peace must not be taken for granted,” he stated.
The day, set aside to observe Ghana’s republican status, was on the theme: ‘Reflect, Reset and Renew for National Prosperity’.

As part of the day, President Mahama addressed non-denominational Christian and Muslim services here in Accra. A senior citizens’ luncheon was also held.
The peace the country enjoys, President Mahama noted was not a product of sound policy or political will but the result of prayer. “It is the fruit of faithful believers who have interceded persistently for the soul of our nation”.
He said in a world where faith divides nations, same was not the case in Ghana as it rather unites, as churches and mosques coexist in mutual respect and in dignity.
“Our different traditions and backgrounds have not weaken us. They have strengthened us in our shared identities. This is a precious gift we must protect. Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, religious extremism and poison of political hostility,” he urged.
According to President Mahama, the above are the seeds of division which must never be allowed to take root in the country.
“We must speak a language of peace, compassion, and mutual respect. We must build bridges and not barriers for we are one people sharing one land and pursuing one identity and destiny,” the President preached.
He thanked the clergy and people of faith for interceding for Ghana in their quite moments and urged them to continue to do so.
