Trader remanded over GIS recruitment scam

A 47-year-old trader, accused of collecting GH¢147, 000 from a businesswoman, under the pretext of recruiting 27 persons into the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), has been remanded by the Adentan Circuit Court.

The accused, Naomi Larweh Teiko, charged with defrauding by false pretences, has pleaded not guilty, and is expected to reappear before court on April 21.

Prosecuting, Inspector Eric Ransford Abban told the court presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Balokah, that the complainant, Hajia Habiba Abdulai, was a businesswoman, residing at Adenta, Accra.

The court heard that Balokah was also a resident of Adenta.

Insp Abban said Balokah allegedly approached the complainant, claiming she knew an Immigration Officer, who could assist in recruiting people into the GIS.

The prosecution said the complainant developed interest and collected money totaling GH¢121,000 from 25 family members.

Insp Abban said the complainant also paid GH¢26,000 to accused for her two daughters to be recruited into GIS.

The prosecution said the complainant handed over the total amount of GH¢147,000 to accused.

Insp Abban said accused, after collecting the money, assured the complainant that the 27 persons would undergo training after they had been medically screened.

The prosecution said accused went into hiding after receiving the money.

Insp Abban said the case was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of accused.

Prosecution said accused in her caution statement admitted the offence and indicated that she had handed over the money to Owusu, an Immigration Officer.

The prosecution said accused failed to lead the police to Owusu. —GNA
